Stump Grinding

stump grinding Steuben

Tree removal is only part of the process. What's left behind can become an eyesore, a tripping hazard, and a barrier to using your property the way you want.

At Joe Sevits Tree Service, we use professional equipment to grind stumps below ground level, allowing you to replant, landscape, or restore the area without the hassle of leftover stumps.

With professional equipment and operators, we are able to provide efficient stump grinding while minimizing disruption to your lawn and surrounding landscape.

Our standard stump grinding service grinds stumps at a depth of 18 inches below ground level. Deeper grinding is available for an additional fee, but is typically only recommended if a concrete pad or permanent structure will be placed.

When Stump Grinding Becomes Necessary

Stump grinding may be recommended after tree removal or whenever a stump begins creating problems for your property. Some of the most common reasons a stump may need to be ground include:

  • Leftover stumps affecting landscaping or mowing

  • Tripping hazards for family or guests

  • Insect activity, fungi, or unwanted growth

  • Difficulty maintaining the surrounding area

  • Preparing for replanting or new landscaping

  • Improving the appearance and usability of the space

In many cases, stump grinding is the most practical way to restore the beauty, safety, and function of your property after a tree has been removed.

Why Not Every Stump Should be Burned or Pulled

We believe in Practical Solutions

Potential Downsides of Burning a Stump:

  • Can take days or even weeks to fully burn, depending on the stump side and moisture content.

  • Risk of fire spreading to nearby grass, structures, or causing a Root Fire

  • May be restricted by local ordinances or seasonal burn bans.

Potential Downsides of Pulling a Stump:

  • Can leave a large hole that requires significant grading and restoration.

  • May damage lawns, landscaping or nearby tree roots during extraction.

  • Often requires heavy equipment access, which can create ruts and soil compaction.

We do not recommend burning stumps due to the risk of root fires.

At Joe Sevits Tree Service, we believe in honest recommendations- not simply the most labor-intensive one.

Many homeowners assume a stump should be burned, excavated, or pulled from the yard to be removed. In reality, those methods can be disruptive to lawns, landscaping, utilities, and surrounding trees.

In many situations, professional stump grinding provides a faster, cleaner, and less invasive solution. By grinding the stump below ground level, we can eliminate the visible stump while minimizing damage to the surrounding area.

Our goal is always to recommend the safest and most practical solution for your property, budget, and long-term plans. Sometimes that is stump grinding, sometimes that is pulling the stump, and sometimes that is just cutting the stump as low as possible. No matter what option you decide on, we will handle it professionally and efficiently.

Our Stump Grinding Process

Professional Tree Care in Northeast Indiana

Joe Sevits Tree Service proudly provides professional stump grinding throughout Fremont, Angola, Steuben County, and its surrounding areas of Northeast Indiana, Northwest Ohio, and Southern Michigan. Our team works with homeowners, property managers, and businesses who want safe, professional tree care handled by experienced operators.

Professional stump grinding begins with a careful evaluation of the stump, and surrounding landscape.

Using specialized equipment, our team grinds the stump below ground level, reducing it to wood chips while minimizing disruption to surrounding lawn and property. Depending on the project and upon request, exposed surface roots may also be addressed to create a cleaner finished appearance. If you would like exposed surface roots ground, please make this known at the time of your free estimate.

Beyond improving appearance, stump grinding helps eliminate mowing obstacles, reduce trip hazards, and create additional usable space within your landscape. It can also help discourage unwanted growth from certain tree species and remove a decaying stump that may attract insects over time.

Once the work is complete, the area is cleaned and prepared for its next use. Whether your goal is planting grass, landscaping, or simply reclaiming usable yard space, we work to leave your property safe, clean, and ready for the future.
